you. Usually. Two things still catch travellers out: fair-use limits and non-EU
countries that look European on a map.

Fair-use limits in plain words

Operators may apply a fair-use policy to data roaming. In practice that means:

A capped roaming data allowance that is smaller than your domestic bundle.
A surcharge per gigabyte once you pass it.
Warnings if you spend more time abroad than at home over a four-month window.

Check your tariff details before a long trip. The cap is often a fraction of what an
unlimited domestic plan suggests.

Countries that are not covered

Switzerland, the UK, Turkey, Albania, Serbia, Bosnia and Montenegro are outside the EU
roaming rules. Prices there can jump to several euros per megabyte depending on your
operator — this is where most shock bills come from.
